Rising Sea Levels June 2014 | Page 7

1. Within 100 years or so, the Greenland ice sheet could be gone, causing a 20 foot increase in sea levels.

2. Scientists estimate that if global temperatures rise 3.6 ˚F above pre-industrial levels (2.3 ˚F above what they are now), the melting will become unstoppable

3. Since 1993, the sea level has risen about 3.1 millimeters per year. More than half the rise is due to "thermal expansion" from warming oceans.

4. Coral reefs take at least 25 years to recover from even the most minor damage.

5. A recent study says we can expect the oceans to rise between 2.5 and 6.5 feet (0.8 and 2 meters) by 2100, enough to swamp many of the cities along the U.S. East Coast. More dire estimates, including a complete meltdown of the Greenland ice sheet, push sea level rise to 23 feet (7 meters), enough to submerge London and Los Angeles

6. Global Mean Sea Level (GMSL) has risen by 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 centimeters). However, the annual rate of rise over the past 20 years has been 0.13 inches (3.2 millimeters) a year, roughly twice the average speed of the preceding 80 years
