Known as " The Biologist of Mayakoba ", Hugo Rivas has a Master of Science from UNAM and has lived in Quintana Roo for 20 years . His love for nature , but above all for wildlife , arose from a very young age , when he went to the ranch where his parents originated from and where he had the opportunity to go fishing or look for frogs ; This interest was reinforced by television programs about explorers who ventured into the forest , the jungle or the tundra , which ultimately led him to study Biology at the University of Guadalajara , where he had wanted to study since he was a child . “ I happened to pass by a building in Guadalajara . I remember that there was a sign that said ' Faculty of Sciences ', so big and I thought ' I want to study there ', without knowing that it was the Faculty of Biological Sciences ... when I was older I had to study there ”, he recounts . Hugo has extensive experience in wildlife management , which he frequently combines with the field of teaching . He worked at the Guadalajara Zoo , while teaching biology in elementary schools . Later , he taught classes at the undergraduate level while studying for a master ' s degree at UNAM and was hired as a freelance for wildlife management services . Already in Quintana Roo , he collaborated in Croco Cun Zoo , specifically in the management of crocodiles ; work that concluded with the reconstruction of the park , after the passage of hurricane " Wilma ", to later venture into environmental consulting . Since 2005 , Hugo has been working in the Mayakoba complexes as an environmental supervisor , in charge of verifying that they comply with the obligations derived from the authorizations they have , through the different programs that make up the Environmental Management and Management System , such as the management of fauna , vegetation , environmental diffusion , waste , etc ., understanding that everything in the environment is closely related . “ I began to understand that wildlife management is related to its habitat , which has to be healthy , uncontaminated , the product of proper waste management , and for people to know how to do it , environmental dissemination is necessary to change their minds . and thus close the cycle ”, he explained . His personal goal within Mayakoba is for people to understand the importance of caring for the environment : “ That he understands why we ask him to take care of the environment , take care of that tree , not to feed a spider monkey , etc … It has been a challenge , it is complicated , but the more battles we win and the more difficulties we have , the more pleasant it is . victory ," he says .
