2.1.6 CREATION OF PERMANENT OR TEMPORARY MEMORY SPACES ( INCLUDING EXHIBITIONS ).
Defining this category proved to be particularly complex , as we are aware that beyond the formal political initiatives or manifestations , there is a wide debate on the colonial past that is manifesting itself in a series of dissemination and awarenessraising actions . These actions include the production of documentaries , the organisation of conferences , seminars , historical routes , artistic performances and theatrical representations . Considering the scope of the project , it was practically impossible to exhaustively compile all of these initiatives across the State without any territorial biases , because of the need to be immersed in numerous archives and sources .
For this reason , we decided to focus this category in this report on what we call ‘ memory spaces ’, since international legislation and experiences in nearby contexts have focused public compensation mainly on the promotion of critical and revised narratives on the colonial past . This involves the creation of monuments and new memories , as well as the establishment of museums and interpretive centres for these pasts .
However , unlike countries such as France , Germany and the United Kingdom , where museums dedicated to slavery and colonialism have increased in number , as well as monuments in honour of anti-colonial leaders , in Spain such actions have not materialised in any significant way . As a result , this category focuses on temporary exhibitions and unofficial temporary memorials , with the aim of highlighting these notable absences in the Spanish cultural and memorial landscape .
