2.1.5 REMOVAL / DEMAND FOR REMOVAL / RESIGNIFICATION OF STREET OR MONUMENT NAMES ( PUBLIC SPACE )
The public space is the main arena where conflicts over memories and tensions around the interpretation of the past naturally appear . The Black Lives Matter movement has again highlighted this situation , as well as the interconnection between the colonial past and contemporary discriminations . This relationship became evident during the global protests , when acts of racist police violence led to the vandalism of numerous monuments . These practices also have a long history , including the Rhodes Must Fall movement in 2015 and other manifestations of anti-colonial iconoclasm , that have placed particular monuments at the centre of the political and media agenda .
This category compiles all the demands for removal or the removal of street or monument names that are related to Spain ’ s colonial and slaveholding past , a reality that is also far removed in magnitude from similar processes in the nearby context , but for which there are already numerous initiatives . An appendix has also been included with changes to this catalogue of names during the Republican period , indicating a potential line for future studies .
