2.1.4 HERITAGE RESTITUTION INITIATIVES
Although there are currently numerous restitution processes throughout Europe and the world , in response to demands for the return of heritage plundered during the conquests and colonisations , these initiatives are still rare in Spain . Nevertheless , we deemed it important to include this category independently this time , covering both the two cases in which a restitution process or demand has been initiated and the projects that address the problem of the origin of the pieces .
Heritage restitution has taken on significant importance in contemporary reparation and compensation strategies . Since the 2018 Savoy-Sarr report in France , many institutions have begun to undertake critical evaluations of their collections , recognising the role they play in perpetuating harmful narratives and stereotypes . This question also arises from the perspective of the cultural divide that has resulted from the appropriation of these cultural assets , considering that most of the artistic and ethnological heritage of former colonies is housed in European museums , limiting access to these nations ' own historical legacy .
