If a tour is not in your cards during your visit, you can still
take in the Eagle Butte Coal Mine Overlook, which is a
short 8 mile drive from the Visitors center. The overlook
is open year round and provides a look into surface coal
mining in the Powder River Basin. Head N on Douglas
Hwy (Hwy 59) until you get to a T. Turn Left on 2nd Street
(Hwy 14-16) and stay on this road for about 6 miles. You
will pass the Campbell County Airport and there will be
a sign that says Coal Mine Overlook surrounded by chain
link fence on the left side of the highway, with an obser-
vation deck, haul truck tire, loader bucket and petrified
wood.
GILLETTE MAIN STREET
Downtown is heart of most towns and Gillette is no
different. Gillette is only one of 849 towns in the United
States that are nationally accredited with the National
Main Street Center. Over 1715 volunteers hours helped
Gillette Main Street earn this prestigious accreditation.
“Without the help of their volunteers, who show up time
and again to assist with downtown events, and their
board, Gillette Main Street would not be able to do the
work they do,” Jessica Seders of Gillette Main Street said.
“There are so many unique shops and boutiques to
shop in.” says Seders. If the history and art of Gillette
piquesyour interest you can download the self led walk-
ing tour app on your iphone or android phones. With
many speciality stores, coffee shops and restaurants like
the Railyard, you can take a leisurely stroll and safely
enjoy Gillette’s small town charm.
