GILLETTE WELCOMES INDIAN RELAY! BY: TERESA GARRETT-MARTIN W ith the Bighorn Mountains to the west and the Black Hills to the east, the city of Gillette is a busy hub for travelers and locals looking to discover the won- ders of Wyoming. Centrally located in the Powder River Basin, Gillette is a corridor to many of Wyoming’s activi- ties and sights to see. Travelers seeking a break from the road can take in the many interesting sites and activities that the city of Gillette has to offer before continuing on their journey. Over Memorial weekend all eyes will be looking towards Gillette as Horse Nations Indian Relay Council brings the extreme sport of Indian Relay to the Cam-Plex Morning- side Park. Cloud Peak Energy 2018 Tour of Champions Season Opener race will bring teams from the surround- ing states to compete for the title of Champion, earning them their seat in HNIRC’s Championship of Champions. Morningside Park traditionally hosts Wyoming Horse Rac- ing, LLC. flat track horse racing on the weekends during the month of June. But on the 26th and 27th of May the excitement of indian relay will kick off the start of their flat track season. “Gillette is looking forward to having all the teams, their families and fans here over Memorial weekend,” says Vis- it Gillette Executive Director, Mary Silvernell. “Most of us have heard about Indian Relay and some of us have even 3 traveled to areas like Sheridan to watch it, but this is the first time we get to experience it here in our hometown.” VISIT GILLETTE Visit Gillette Visitors Center is a wonderful location for the friends and family of relay to stop in and see what other activities they can partake in while in Gillette. Located at 1810 S. Douglas Highway Suite A, they will point you in the right direction for everything you want to see or do during your visit. Memorial Weekend is also marks the opening weekend for the Coal Mine Tours of the Eagle Butte Coal Mine. Operated by Alpha Coal, one of the largest coal companies in the nation, Eagle Butte Coal Mine is just one of the mines that helped cement Gillette as the “Energy Capital of the Nation” Two tour times of 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. are available and the tour is $5.00 per person.
