Davin Heckman Busy
as a Fulbright Scholar
Mark Schersten Named
New CAS Dean
SHU Associate Professor of
English Davin Heckman,
who is studying and teaching this year at the University of Bergen in Norway
as a Fulbright Scholar, has
had the following activity
over the past few months:
Dr. Mark Schersten was
recently named the Dean
of the College of Arts
and Sciences. He began
teaching philosophy at
Siena 27 years ago and
has served as chairperson
of the Humanities division and as a member
on Academic Cabinet for 15 years. Schersten
co-chaired the steering committee to prepare
the Higher Learning Commission self study
in 2002, and has participated on numerous
regular and ad hoc committees. He also served
as faculty ombudsperson, chairperson of TFA,
and coordinator of the annual Chiodini-Fontana
Ethics Lecture Series.
He published an article entitled “Inside Out of
the Box: Default Settings and Electronic Poetics”
in the journal Dichtung Digital. Dichtung Digital
(dichtung-digital.de) is a journal for reviews
and scholarship about digital literature and
art. It was founded in June 1999. The magazine
features content in both German and English
(with all contributions in English).
Heckman also recently had his article, entitled
“Electronic Literature as a Sword of Lightning,”
published in the Leonardo Electronic Almanac.
It is the web-based counterpart to the print
journal, Leonardo.
He also chaired a panel on literary criticism and
digital media at the International Symposium
for Electronic Art in Istanbul, Turkey. On Sept. 17
he presented his paper “Tagging Practices and
the Disturbed Dialectic of Literary Criticism.”
Davin also presented in October at the online
symposium “Materialities of Text: Between
the Codex and the Net.” The symposium is at
the University of Westminster in Great Britain.
He presented on the topic, “The Politics of
Plasticity: Neoliberalism, Deliberation and the
Digital Text.”

Elected to CCNE
Nominating Board
SHU Director of Nursing Dr. Sue Idczak has
been elected to the Nominating Board of the
Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education
(CCNE). Officially recognized by the U.S.
Secretary of Education as a national accreditation agency, the Commission on Collegiate
Nursing Education (CCNE) is an autonomous
accrediting agency, contributing to the improvement of the public’s health. CCNE ensures
the quality and integrity of baccalaureate,
graduate, and residency programs in nursing.
English Faculty Member
Matthew Barbee Visits
University of Maryland
SHU Assistant Professor of English Matthew
Barbee visited the University of Richmond Oct.
24 to speak with students and faculty studying
Southern history. A class on the history of Richmond is using his dissertation as a core text.
Barbee’s dissertation focuses on the ways the
past, especially the Civil War and the Civil Rights
Movement, are “remembered” in Richmond.
He discussed his research with the students,
and gave an informal public lecture to students,
faculty, and community members.
