R.S.M, presented at a Christianity and Literature
Conference at the University of Dayton in
October. McVeigh read a paper on literary
theory titled “Literature and the ‘I’: What
Difference Does Christianity Make?” Sister
Pat read some of her recent poetry.
Party Bids Farewell to
Retiring SHU Faculty
A retirement party honoring those SHU faculty
members who retired at the end of the last
academic year was held May 5, 2011, in the
Stubnitz Lab Theater. Those honored at the
party were: Sister Marilyn Barnett (Theological
Studies), Robert Brady (Counseling, Graduate
College), Linda Brewster (Counseling, Graduate
College), Michael Lorenz (Music, above),
Sister Sharon McGuire (Nursing) and Simone
Yehuda (English).
SHU Receives Heart Safe
Organization Award
Lenawee Community Ambulance presented a
Heart Safe Organization Award to Siena Heights
University at the annual Emergency Medical
Services Recognition Awards Dinner on May
17 in Ann Arbor. SHU was recognized for its
cardiac emergency response program, making
automated external defibrillators available on
campus, training personnel in CPR and AED
use, and having a cardiac emergency response
plan in place that is practiced regularly. Shown

President Reflects on Life’s Lessons
F
ollowing an academic career spanning more than 40 years,
including serving as president of six colleges and universities and
leading hundreds of international students to higher education
in the U.S., Louis C. Vaccaro, Ph.D. has completed his eighth book,
a memoir titled, “Around the Corner: From Shoeshine Boy to
College President.”
Vaccaro, who even in his eighth decade continues to teach and
consult in China, recently completed his second Fulbright assignment in Indonesia. The book details his experiences growing
up in a large Italian immigrant family in Los Angeles during the
Great Depression and the war years, his studies at the University
of Southern California, where he earned his bachelor and master
degrees, and his years as a college president and international
education advocate.
Vaccaro completed his doctorate at Michigan State University and began his higher education career with the Jesuits at Marquette University in Milwaukee. He was president of six
colleges and universiti
