COLLEGE ERA) After a change in leadership in 1988, it didn’t take long for new head coach Hal McAfee to return Tarleton to championship status as the second-year coach lifted Tarleton to its fifth TIAA championship in 1989 with a record of 9-3 and an 8-2 mark in league action. Tarleton finished the regular season on a three-game winning streak to secure a spot in the NAIA playoffs, where the Texans defeated St. Mary’s (KS) in the first round 16-6 before falling to Westminster (PA) in the next round. Tarleton advanced to the NAIA playoffs for the fourth time in school history - and third time in four years - where they faced the same path as the year before.
