Our RAP Champion , CEO Dr Scott Crawford , has driven the initiative from the outset with the support of the RAP Working Group Chair , Donna Turner and the RAP Working Group Facilitator , Karen Vidler . The group consulted closely throughout the process with the TOMG and conducted four workshop activities over a ten-month period to develop this Plan . The NQ Dry Tropics Partnership Coordinator facilitated these workshops , using the templates and resources provided by Reconciliation Australia .
Each workshop included an awarenessraising component , with group members sharing experiences and histories . The group recognised the value and benefits of this process , such as improved understanding of systemic racism , truth telling of historical facts , and improving respect and relationships between group members . In addition , several consultations took place with the Board , TOMG , Senior Management Team , and staff .
In the NQ Dry Tropics Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan we refer to : -
“ Traditional Owners ” the people who are the traditional custodians of a particular area of land and sea Country for the Burdekin Region . There are 16 groups whose land and sea Country is part of the region .
“ First Nations ” or “ Indigenous ” peoples refers to the wider community of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within the region and throughout Australia .
This terminology was provided from the NQ Dry Tropics TOMG and reflects the different roles , cultural authority , and responsibilities that Traditional Custodians have in regards to Cultural Lore in caring for Country , and who can speak for particular parts of Country .
