However, if I say I’m going to earn $240,000, it’s still SMART, but it gives me something to work towards. If I achieve it, how great will my year be? It’s now inspiring and motivating. 4. Your goals need to be written correctly Your goals need to be positive, specific and written like they’ve already happened. Focus on what you want, not what you don’t. Step into it, try it on for size. Imagine yourself living that goal. There’s a reason to be so specific. The unconscious mind doesn’t process negatives, so if I said, “Do NOT think of a cold glass of wine right now.” What did you just think about? Here’s how to reframe your goals You Say I am not going to fail at this I am not going to get distracted Brain Hears I am going to fail at this I am going to get distracted Change To I am successful I am focussed Also, your brain is busy. Tell it exactly what to do, or it will choose the easiest path. It wants nothing more than to say, “Job done” and move onto the next task, which is why breaking goals down quarterly works so well. 5. Proper goals are outside your comfort zone Big goals should make you uncomfortable, but not overwhelmed. Uncomfortable is where the magic happens. So, break them down into smaller tasks that you can achieve. How do you eat an elephant? One mouthful at a time of course! Work backwards when creating your plan. Most people overestimate what they can do in a week, but underestimate what they can do in a year. If we take a financial goal as an example, work backwards from December: December: Total of $240,000 November: Total of $200,000 October: Total of $180,000 February: Total of $8,000 6. Action! Remember a goal without action is just a dream. Look at your first milestone for February. What action you need to do to hit this first milestone? Focus only on what you need to do to make this a success. Use visualisation and affirmations to help you reach your goal. Create a vision board. Convince your mind that what it’s seeing is really happening (your brain finds it hard to tell the difference!). 7. Celebrate Make sure you celebrate each milestone with something for yourself. What’s the point in working really hard, if there’s nothing in it for you! 8. Involve your children Get the kids involved in setting some family goals and personal ones. They love to be included in the big decisions. If you’re saving for a holiday, get the kids to cut out pictures of where they would like to go. Renovating? Get them to find pictures of their ideal rooms. Kids need personal goals as well – sporting, education, friendship. Help them find pictures to represent these. Put them on their vision board and set weekly goals to achieve them. This will build their confidence and create a solid habit for future success. Remember your life is about creating who you want to be. When you create success in your mind you create success in your life. And who doesn’t want to be successful?
