own buttery. Whilst this may seem a simple and straightforward act, the symbolic importance of representing black alumna in visible ways in historically exclusive spaces is extremely important and exciting. The exhibition will hopefully move across other colleges in the coming year.
Apart from the Black Cantabs Project, this term Queens’ held Cambridge’s first ‘Cultural Appropriation vs Appreciation’ workshop where we talked about the much thrown-about term “cultural appropriation”. The turn-out was great
and it led to a very engaging conversation about how we engage with other people’s cultures in ways that are both sensitive and responsible. In places like Cambridge it is easy to adopt the pretty ornaments of marginalised cultures without the pain, repercussions or cultural baggage that comes with them when people of that culture do.
