Michaelmas Competition!

Lauren Downing (Queens' Arts Society Co-President)

Queens' Arts

The theme for the competition was 'Blues', and the aim was to celebrate all the talent that's hiding in the woodwork around Queens'. And boy did we get to see some talent! All the entries were of a high standard and the judges had a very difficult decision deciding who should be the winner. However, I am delighted to announce that the winner of this term's competition is…

Matilda Wickham with her piece 'Still Here'

Here's what she has to say about it:

"It's about loss and holding onto the people, places, things etc. we’ve lost and how that can be both paralysing and grant a feeling of transcendence. In other words, when you hold onto something which has gone you are both stuck reliving memories but also in doing so transcending time because you’re not really living in the present. The girl (me) holds a pig skull to her stomach, which initially I thought about as alluding to miscarriage. I have never experienced miscarriage first hand but it feels like an appropriate experience to reference, especially if you lose something/someone you’ve not had for enough time. As well as losing the person, you’re losing everything that could have been and its an agonising and tragic loss of potential." - Matilda
