give birth to them all. They are the pillars of a corrupt unconscious belief system that sabotages success, and because of these destructive beliefs, bank accounts dwindle, self-esteem suffers, relationships fail, health falters and inner peace is always out of reach. When you understand which of the seven beliefs are operating in your own life and in the minds of others, you will see how they have affected the past and how they will control the future—if you let them. THE NEW PERFORMANCE CONVERSATION The next time you meet with your team to discuss performance, use what you have learned to get to the bottom of their behavior. When you ask “why did or didn’t you do this or that” or “what happened,” it actually reinforces that they are doing wrong or that the spa is asking for more than they wish to give. The answer to why and what is likely below their awareness as it is in their subconscious programs for selfsabotage. Instead, discover what their limiting beliefs are. Diagnosing Symptoms of Self-Sabotage Use the following checklist for yourself and your team to see if sabotage is undermining your results: CHECK ALL THAT APPLY: ❑ I get off to a great start and as soon as I see concrete results, something happens and I slow down or stop. ❑ I have a hard time getting around to doing what’s important until the last minute, and then I rush to get it done and feel annoyed at myself for creating pressure and not giving myself enough time. ❑ I know I need to make a change but I feel nothing will really make a difference, so I don’t make changes. ❑ I feel confident until I see someone getting ahead of me. Then I stop trying and feel defeated. ❑ I get distracted by other tasks, phone calls, emergencies and/or the requests from others and avoid my priorities. ❑ I feel that everything needs to be in order and perfect before I start something important. ❑ I get tired and feel the need to sleep when I am overwhelmed. ❑ I make a commitment and actually see myself sabotaging my results with phrases such as: “I’ll do it later,” or “Do the opposite of what I know is right.” ❑ I have a goal but the moment I get excited about it, I feel defeated and say things like: “Why bother, it’s never going to happen?” or “What’s the use? It’s not going to work for me.” ❑ When things go well, I start to worry that it’s too good to be true and feel anxious about what’s next. November 2012 ■ PULSE 31
