P: How does the Nominating Committee determine
which candidates are best suited to serve on the ISPA
Board?
A: The ISPA Board fills out a survey called the Skill Set
Questionnaire that is used by the Nominating Committee to
determine the current skill set of the board and what skills are
needed in the new board members.
P: The same Skill Set Questionnaire is also included in the
board application to give the Nominating Committee a direct
comparison.
P: Once a member has submitted their application
what are the next steps?
P: All of the applications are combined and distributed to the
Nominating Committee. In mid-April a first round of phone
interviews are conducted with each applicant and two
Nominating Committee members. After which the committee
determines which candidates are best suited to move on to
the second round of interviews.
P: How are the second interviews conducted, via conference call?
P: The Nominating Committee has a face-to-face meeting in
May when all of the second interviews are conducted via conference call. The difference is that during the second
interview, the candidates speak with the entire committee.
A: During that time, the committee also has lengthy discussions surrounding each candidate and who will best round
out the skill set of the board. Afterward, the Nominating
Committee presents a slate of candidates to the ISPA membership for approval.
P: When you say slate of candidates, what does that
exactly mean?
A: The Nominating Committee presents a group of candidates from those who applied. When voting, members
approve the entire slate instead of each person individually.
P: Who votes on the slate of candidates?
P: In July, all primary and secondary members of ISPA are sent
the board of directors ballot to approve or deny the slate of candidates. Voting is open for exactly one month.
A: It is all outlined in the ISPA Bylaws Section VI, Article 3:
The Nominating Committee shall propose the names of nomi-

P: How long are the elected terms for ISPA Board
members?
A: Board members are elected to serve one three-year term.
At the end of their first term, they are eligible for re-election
by the membership to serve a second three-year term.
P: After the second term, there is a required one year break
before a member is eligible to apply for the board again.
P: What kind of time commitment is expected of an
ISPA Board member?
P: A minimum of two days spent at each of the three ISPA
Board meetings throughout the year, as well as two to three
hours each month spent through conference calls and task
force work. Attending Conference is also mandatory for each
