Saving dollars, building quality
Behind the scenes, the Facilities Maintenance Department is finding innovative ways to improve City facilities while making every taxpayer dollar go further. By designing and fabricating projects in-house, the team is delivering durable, high-quality improvements at a fraction of the cost of outsourcing.
One of the department ' s latest accomplishments is a newly designed and fabricated gate ramp for the Communications shed at Whispering Pines Park. Rather than hiring an outside contractor, the Facilities Maintenance team completed the project in-house for approximately $ 700 in materials.
Outside vendor estimates range from $ 4,500, meaning the City saved an estimated 84 % on the project. The finished product provides a safe, durable solution while showcasing the expertise and craftsmanship of our own employees.
The team also recently fabricated and installed a new back gate for the Neighborhood Services Department. Every phase of the project, from design and steel fabrication to painting and installation was completed by the Facilities Maintenance staff.
Using approximately $ 1,300 in materials, including steel, lumber, paint and hardware, the team delivered a custombuilt gate designed for long-term security and reliability. An outside vendor quoted the project at approximately $ 4,000, making the in-house solution nearly 68 % less expensive while maintaining quality.
These projects are more than construction successes; they ' re examples of responsible stewardship of public funds. By leveraging the talent, experience and creativity of the Facilities Maintenance Department, the City can complete projects faster, reduce costs and keep valuable taxpayer dollars working within our community.
