Risk Management

Using innovation to make safety stick
Pierre Vignier, Project Coordinator for the Utility Systems Department and a dedicated City employee who prioritizes safety above all, found an innovative way to improve the routine vehicle safety check using skills learned in the City’ s Innovation Sigma Green Belt Course.
Recognizing the challenge of completing a two-person task alone, he turned to a simple but powerful tool – sticky notes. By breaking the 24 safety check steps into individual notes, he could visually organize and identify redundancies.
He grouped the steps into seven, then five logical packets and rearranged them into a more efficient sequence that ensured thoroughness without sacrificing safety.
After updating and testing the new checklist, Pierre found the process not only saved time but also reduced frustration and improved consistency. His proactive approach to refining the safety check took just 60 minutes but had lasting benefits.
By sharing his method with coworkers, the team adopted a laminated version of the checklist, promoting safety and sustainability. Pierre ' s work shows that innovation and a commitment to safety go hand-inhand.
