Naturally PSL: Green Spaces and Places
This month, our team kicked off its first community meeting at Whispering Pines Park as part of the park stewardship initiative funded by the On Common Ground program.
Collaborating with the Love Your Block team, Parks and Recreation and Naturally PSL Conservation Corps volunteers, more than 60 neighbors and community members gathered to learn about the exciting neighborhood projects completed last year. We explored new opportunities to transform a vacant green space parcel in the Whispering Pines neighborhood into a vibrant community space together this year. We are grateful for everyone who attended and shared their voices on what matters most to them, helping us cocreate a neighborhood green space that truly reflects their values.
Building on the momentum of the kick-off, the team hosted an Invasive Plant Challenge Day on Jan. 31. Working alongside City staff and experts from the UF / IFAS St. Lucie County Extension, the team is committed to protecting our native ecosystems through nature-based biological control methods.
These innovative strategies included targeted grazing, where two friendly goats( Grasshopper and Cricket) were used to naturally clear dense undergrowth, and the introduction of specialized air potato beetles to manage invasive populations without the need for heavy chemical control.
In total, the 36 volunteers cleared 425 pounds of litter and 33 pounds of invasive seedlings from a future neighborhood space!
