It was the second day of Hanukkah, an Eight-day Festival of Lights, and my family and I were lighting the candles to the menorah. It was a dark and stormy night when an unusual scent filled the room. I turned around to find my mother's silk curtain engulfed in flames. My dog, Scout, barked loudly as my dad yelled for everyone to run outside. As we frantically exited the house, I turned around to find our home burning down to the ground with the flames unstoppably swallowing our house. Not even the rain could stop the fire-- when all of a sudden there was a loud clap of thunder. It kept repeating, getting louder and louder. It seemed as if the wind was calling my name.

"JOSEF, JOSEF WAKE UP! COME ON, YOU ARE GOING TO MISS THE BUS!" screamed my annoying sister, Becca as I drowsily woke up. Oh it was just a dream, I thought to myself. “Come on! The bus will be here soon” she called again. “I’m coming, I’m coming hold on”. Suddenly I heard a loud honking, the bus was here!

I leaped out of bed, grabbed my shoes and backpack and bolted out the door. Just as I got up the last step of the bus, everyone started laughing hysterically. I looked around to see what they were laughing at, and then I realized. I was wearing my boxers and my flamboyant bunny slippers. I screeched and jumped off the bus.

After I got my mom to drive me to school, I had a pretty good day. I got a few comments about my SpongeBob boxers, but I blew them off. All I could think about were the gifts I was going to get for Hanukkah. By the time we reached my stop on the bus, I could barely stand the wait. I ran off the bus and sprinted into the house. In order to have enough time for opening gifts, I did all of my homework really fast. At dinner, we devoured our latkes, or as some people call them, potato pancakes, which are eaten during Jewish celebrations, and were about to settle in front of the menorah when we noticed something odd. The menorah was gone!
