Project9ja MY LOVE FOR MUSIC “ Music is like medicine. It keys into your emotion, heals and makes a lot of things feel better. My love for music started since I was a kid but I never thought of being a music artiste. When I got to realize I had the gift of singing, I would sing like nobody could sing better. As a guy from a Christian background, my music definitely was supposed to be in the gospel genre. Well growing up, I didn’t listen or enjoy only gospel music. I listened to different types and loved it. So definitely being based on gospel was not really possible, but I didn’t want to do ‘dirty’ music too of course. Music as a profession to me was a well accomplished life. Few years ago I just wanted to ‘blow’, to be seen on TV and all that .But I realized that music especially in Nigeria is a real struggle. Your gift here doesn’t really play the major role of getting famous for you. There are a lot of artistes probably more talented but are still struggling. Even with the help of social media it takes luck, ‘con- nection’ or hard work to get a large crowd to know you or hear your music. Luck and connection doesn’t seem to work for me at this point so I have no option but to work hard. Another difficulty doing music in Nigeria is the domination of a particular genre of music. Ni- gerians go for trend and when you don’t go for trend you are not recognized at all. The good thing for me is that my music fits into the Nigerian trend but also, while singing what people would love, I also make sure I do the music I love. Giving up is something that will come to one’s mind a number of times because of the difficul- ties attached to music, especially funding. Stories have also been told of how the music industry is a scary place to be and that not all flashy things are gotten in a clean way. However, the love of music and God are the only things that can really keep one going, not expecting too much but also hoping for the best, putting full dedication and consistence”. Some of Ephraim’s songs include Woman Crush, Afromashup, Forever and Wonderful. They are available on Soundcloud, Reverbnation and YouTube. Ephraim Fumen Gwadah Efraim_fumen Iam_efraim page 42
