Section 2: Findings from SUN Project Leader’ s interview with Vice Principal
The key findings from the interview were that the intensive, tailored support over five days, with strong leadership and relationship-building playing a crucial role and had a big impact on students’ confidence, attitude to the subject and mindset. The facilitator’ s personalised approach, including building strong relationships with each student and addressing their specific challenges, was key to the programme’ s success. Students could see tangible improvement and seem to have changed their mindset from“ I’ m going to fail” to“ I can do it!” This boost in confidence and visible progress( pre- post- programme assessments) greatly enhanced their engagement and belief in their abilities. The Vice Principal’ s feedback on the project was very positive including expressing interest in replicating and delivering a similar programme in-house due to the value they could see in the programme.
Key challenges included attendance issues and balancing participation with other subjects. Timing near exams was seen as optimal, though earlier implementation( e. g. January or February) was suggested to reduce exam-period pressures while still benefiting students. Other suggestions for improvement included flexible student attendance, as some of the students were unable to attend all sessions and there were students who could have taken their place for example for one day.
