Hay CWA wins award in Land Cookery Competition
The Hay Country Womens Association (CWA) recently participated in the 2014 Land Cookery competition
held at Jerilderie. The Land Cookery Competition is sponsored by The Land newspaper
Hay CWA branch were successful in winning the award for the most entries in Sturt group, which consists of
Berrigan Finley, Jerilderie, Narrandra, Bulloak, Coleambly/Argoon and Leeton branches.
President of Hay CWA Branch, Glenda McNamara would like to “send her congratulations and thanks to all
our Hay members who entered the competition. “ Coleambly/Argoon was the successful branch, taking out
the award for the ‘Best Overall’ results for the day.
Winners at the Group level competition are now eligible to participate at State level. This year the CWA
State conference is being held at Griffith in May.
Hay CWA branch were have been successful in obtaining two entries for State competition. The Hay Primary
School entry of Lemon Poppy Seed Muffins, obtained first place in their section. Congratulations to Beau
Hutchinson’s group of boys who baked the winning entry. There were 11 entries in total from the primary
school. Hay CWA is very proud of the efforts of the children. Thank you to all the children who participated
and the staff who organised and supervised the contestants. Hay CWA wishes Beau’s team, every success
at the State level in May.
President Gwenda McNamara, was also successful with a Chocolate Butter Cake. The cake was entered in
the ‘Latter Memorial’ category. Gwenda will also be exhibiting at the State level and representing Hay CWA.
A reminder that Hay CWA is conducting a Fashion Parade on Saturday 5th April at the Hay
Services Club. Luncheon at 12.30pm will be followed by the parade and then afternoon tea.
Cost is $15.00 which will aid CWA Funds in Hay. Tickets are available at Hay Services Club
and the ‘Printed Post’ office (next to IGA) Tickets must be purchased no later than Friday 4th
April to assist with catering
Lemon Poppy Seed
Muffins
2 ½ cups SR Flour
90 g cold butter chopped
1 cup (220g) caster sugar
1 ¼ cups (310ml) buttermilk
1 egg beaten lightly
Rind of 1 lemon
2 level tablespoons of Poppy seeds
Pre heat oven to 180°C or 160°C fan force
Grease 12 hole muffin pan (⅓ cup/80mls)
