NAIDOC Celebrations in Hay NAIDOC stands for National Aboriginies and Islanders Day Observance Committee NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. The Hay community celebrated with the help of Nathan Blacklock, retired St. George rugby league player, mentor and a frequent visitor to Hay. Nathan visited the three local schools and unveiled a plaque at the Hay Plains Child Care Centre. Made by the Men’s Shed, the plaque has engraved upon it the aboriginal word for cubby house. After the unveiling Nathan gave out beanies to the children and a celebration cake, made by Tara Dixon, was cut and enjoyed by all. Excerpts from social media page Face Book * Another fantastic day today celebrating NAIDOC, we had a great day at the public school with the lovely students who thoroughly enjoyed having Nathan Blacklock give a coaching class and doing a lot of signatures for the students. *Tonight we had the free disco & that was a huge success with over 120 children coming along to celebrate. A huge thank you to staff & members for helping out over the last few days & tonight * Thumbs up to Nari Nari for putting on the free disco for the kids tonight as well as the free feed!!
