FAVORITE BOOK ? FAVORITE MOVIE / TV SHOW ?
I ’ m not really sure what my favorite book is because my favorite category changes from month to month . However , overall , I think I can narrow my favorite books down to three : George Orwell ’ s 1984 , Aldous Huxley ’ s Brave New World , and Madeline Miller ’ s Circe . While I like 1984 and Brave New World for a variety of reasons , including my own takes on a perfect world and how it differs from the dystopian societies of the two books , I enjoy Circe for an almost entirely different reason . Circe has my heart because I feel for the titular character . I think that the novel is written so beautifully , which is why I tried to mimick the author ’ s style and tone for my own modern myth depicting Phaethon ’ s Heliad sisters . My favorite movie is Inception , which was first introduced to me by my father . I enjoy Inception because I am a vivid dreamer who can remember dreams long after waking up , and I often have lucid dreams , which is a wild experience . So , Inception was an interesting movie for me to watch , and it has become one of my comfort movies , which I can watch over and over again .
ANY WORDS OF WISDOM FOR OTHER YOUNG CLASSICISTS OUT THERE ?
For other young classicists , I think the best piece of advice is what really kept me going through this entire process : remember your roots and work your way up . I could ’ ve never imagined that I would win the Petrino award back when I first read that mythology book with my mom . Yet , all these years later , I did , and the thing that helped me stick it out whenever I felt like giving up was remembering my roots . Think of how much you improved from then ! It went from knowing the basics of mythology to the smallest details of myths to learning Latin for the first time to being able to recite and understand long passages in Latin ! Progress isn ’ t linear or exponential , but it ’ s real , at least . I remembered my roots and held tight to why I found so much joy with classics , and by doing that , I was able to show my enthusiasm for it . So , for other young classicists , I ’ d like to say that the best thing to do is not to work so hard that you forget all the details that hold you true to yourself but instead embrace everything that made you into who you are today .
