Postgraduate Programme Handbook Feb 2013 REFERENCING The purpose of referencing in an academic paper is to accurately record the information sources, allowing readers to locate the information and assess its validity and currency. In addition the use of literature enables the writer to support their thoughts, concepts or ideas with credible evidence and acknowledge the original writers. In all programmes students are required to use the Harvard referencing system. This ensures consistency of standards and reflects the approach adopted by the majority of nursing journals. If you have any queries about referencing, you can also ask your tutor for support. SUPPORT FOR ACADEMIC WRITING AND SKILLS The Academic Skills Centre The Academic Skills Centre is an area in My Dundee along with Advance@Dundee which has been developed by the University to support all students in the development of academic writing skills. This area gives support in academic issues (such as plagiarism), referencing and academic writing skills, as well as other resources, tips, quizzes and links to other online help areas. PLAGIARISM AND ACADEMIC DISHONESTY Any action on your part which involves plagiarism (defined as the unacknowledged use of another’s work as if it were one’s own) or other form of academic dishonesty, in work which may be assessed as part of the requirements for an academic award, will be regarded as a serious offence. Plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty are treated with the utmost seriousness within the University and will be penalised accordingly. The marks and results of any student who is found guilty of such an offence will be adjusted, potentially to zero with whatever consequences would normally follow from such performance. Extreme cases of proven academic dishonesty can be penalised by exclusion from the University and the refusal to award a diploma/degree. The University's Regulations governing plagiarism and 21
