Undergraduate Programme Handbook Aug 2013 ASSIGNMENT WORDAGE It is important that you check the set word limit for each assignment and comply with this. The word count for a written assignment is based on the text. The contents page, appendices, reference lists and bibliographies are not included in the word count. Sources cited in the text (i.e. author, date and any quotations) are included in the word count. OVERWORDAGE LIMIT FOR ASSIGNMENTS Policy Students should comply with the set word limit for coursework Assignments which exceed the stated word limit by more than 10% will be penalised 1) a) The word count for a written assignment (e.g. essay, report, literature review) is based on the text. The contents page, abstracts, appendices, reference lists and bibliographies are not included in the word count. b) Sources cited in the text (i.e. author, date and any quotations) are included in the word count. 2) Assignments which exceed the set wordage by 10% and 20% will have a penalty of one grade applied at the time of marking (B2 to B3; C3 to D1 etc). 3) Coursework which is more than 20% over wordage will not be marked and will be graded as Bad Fail (BF). ? The penalty applies only to over wordage. Students whose work is under wordage effectively potentially penalise themselves by failing to meet the assignment criteria. ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING The assignment for most modules is to write an academic paper. Each module has an aim and outcomes to guide the focus and content of the assignment. 22
