Funding your studies

Fees and funding
You ’ re investing in a better future . We want to help you do it wisely . So here are the key facts and all of your options .
You can find the course fees in this prospectus course section and online at port . ac . uk / postgrad-courses .
Paying tuition fees
Fees vary considerably by course . But your choices for paying them are the same :
• In full during registration
• In instalments ( different methods and plans available )
Living expenses
Remember to consider more than fees . We estimate the cost of living in Portsmouth for a calendar year is around £ 11,000 . This should cover typical shared student accommodation in the private rental sector , together with food , toiletries , utility bills , books , clothing , and modest travel and leisure activities . Of course , it all depends on your lifestyle .
Funding a Master ’ s degree
You have various options : an official student loan and / or a scholarship or bursary , or alternative funding .
Postgraduate Master ’ s loans
The UK Government loans are paid directly to you and can be used towards tuition fees , living costs and other course costs on both taught and MRes or MPhil courses . Borrow as much as you need , up to £ 11,570 for your course .**
Am I eligible ? You must be a UK national , or have settled status in the UK , currently living in England or Wales , and aged under 60 at the start of your course .
These loans are not based on your family ’ s income , so there ’ s no means-testing .
How can I apply ? If your course is eligible ( most are , but the course web page will say if yours isn ’ t ) simply search and apply online . If you normally live in England *, you ’ ll apply through Student Finance England . If you normally live in Wales *, go to Student Finance Wales . Different funding for postgraduate study is available to students from Scotland and Northern Ireland .
When do I repay ? After finishing your course , you ’ ll start to repay your loan at six per cent of any annual income over £ 21,000 . You will repay this alongside any undergraduate loans you have .**
* Moving somewhere to study does not count as normally living there .
** The amount is subject to change .
PGCE funding
Loans
When doing a PGCE you can apply for the same student funding as an undergraduate student . This might include a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan . To figure out the terms on which you ’ d pay a loan back , visit port . ac . uk / teach .
Bursaries
If you ’ re training to teach , the Department of Education currently offer training bursaries of up to £ 26,000 , though this depends on the subject you are specialising in .
Scholarships and bursaries for Master ’ s courses
You can use scholarships and bursaries to fund some or all of your course fees .
Am I eligible ?
• If you are a UK fee-paying student looking to study an MA , MSc , MRes , MPA or LLM you could get £ 3,000 towards your fees with our Master ’ s scholarship for academic excellence
