Research and PhD funding
We attract funding for postgraduate research degrees from a range of sources .
• Postgraduate doctoral loans – non-means-tested UK Government loans of up to £ 27,265 * towards tuition fees , living costs and other course costs , to be repaid in the same way as a Master ’ s loan .
• PhD scholarships and bursaries – a number of fully-funded threeyear scholarships will be available for 2022 entry across a range of subject areas .
• ESRC South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership – fee and maintenance grant funding for social science research in psychology and area studies subjects .
• BBSRC South Coast Biosciences ( SoCoBio ) Doctoral Training Partnership – fee and maintenance grant funding for research in biological sciences .
• STFC Doctoral Training Grant – fee and maintenance grant funding for research in astrophysics and cosmology , with support from the South East Physics Network ( SEPNet ).
• Alumni – if you have a University of Portsmouth qualification , you may be eligible for up to 20 per cent off your tuition fees .

International scholarships
If you are an international student who hasn ’ t studied with us before , you may be eligible for one of the University of Portsmouth ’ s international scholarships .
• The Chancellor ’ s Global Academic Merit Scholarship offers £ 5,000 tuition fee discount to eligible students for the first year of study
• The Vice-Chancellor ’ s Global Development Scholarship offers £ 1,600 tuition fee discount to eligible students for the first year of study
Students must be self-funded and may only receive one University of Portsmouth international scholarship per course .

EU Transition Scholarship
Following the UK ’ s departure from the EU , if you ’ re a student resident in the EU , EEA or Switzerland , and you join the University of Portsmouth in 2022 , you ’ ll be eligible for our Transition Scholarship . The scholarship will apply to new postgraduate taught and postgraduate research students in 2022 / 23 .
The scholarship will be applied to your fees throughout the length of your course . As a result , the actual fee you ’ ll pay will be equivalent to the fee for UK students in 2022 / 23 and beyond . Alternative funding for postgraduate courses
Some organisations , charities and trusts offer grants and bursaries .
Am I eligible ? These tend to be awarded based either on academic merit or other specified criteria .
How can I apply ? We suggest valuable online and printed resources on the postgraduate fees and funding pages at port . ac . uk / postgraduate – from the Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding website , to directories of grants , charities and trusts , these will help you identify sources of funding that may suit you . We can provide a letter of support for your funding application if required .
When do I repay ? Funding like this usually doesn ’ t need to be repaid – but the awarding organisation may ask you to keep them updated on your progress .
