Opening Reception : Thursday, December 4 at 7PM
Joshua Barber paints modern-day icons and landscapes
and has recently been exhibited in the UK, New York and
Los Angeles. His work has also been in Dreweatts Urban
Art Auction in London and exhibited at the prestigious
Virginia Museum of Fine Art's Art After Hours. Barber says,
“Each one of us is surrounded by a sphere of solitude that
not even the closest intimacy can break. This loneliness feeds our fears, nightmares and our deepest
regrets. But loneliness is not bad in itself — when we’re alone, we pay attention. Small events take on
deep significance and hold this answer we wish we could share with the world—but we know deep
down inside, it just wouldn’t come out right."

January 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Millions from such camps
are no longer with us—the time to honor the courage and sacrifice of those still living is short. In
Richmond there are approximately 30 Survivors. These remarkable
individuals regularly pass through the doors of the Weinstein JCC. It is
our desire to create a lasting tribute to them and to always remember
the ineffable tragedy of the Shoah so that it may never happen again.
This project is photographed by Richmond-based artist Dean Whitbeck.
His photographer life began in the Bronx as a high school English teacher.
It was during this time that he learned the magnitude of seeing life through
others' eyes. He began to not only see the camera as an instrument for
creating art but a tool for generating social awareness. This collaboration
will provide a permanent connection between our community and the
remarkable Survivors who will live on through these portraits.
