1 to 6 : More of the tasks being performed .
precision , hence plumbing is also a craft where detail is the order of the day . Teaching these youngsters at such an early stage about these finer points impacts on their lives as such attention to detail affects everything they do .
Plumbing Africa understands that there are similar activities in KZN and one to start shortly in Gauteng . As the one speaker so pointedly stated , “ we have ageing tradespersons in our country .”
So true and it becomes critical to embark on this type of activity now . It is certainly good that the technical school concept is returning in force so all industries can get back to the trades where youngsters can start learning about the trades at the critical Grade 10 and 11 stages .
Final day saw 14 learners compete for the first , second and third prizes . Under the watchful eyes of Gerrie and Nico Davico , a local
plumber , the last task was started . The task was scheduled for 45 minutes and counted for 25 % of the marks . Apart from a few sweat beads on the forehead , a slight burn , calls for assistance and shaky hands , the learners did well – all completing the task within the allotted time . Then it was back to accommodation , catch a breather and make one ’ s way to the HTS Louis Botha school hall for prize-giving .
Organiser of the event , Wimpie Lodewyk , managed the proceedings through the speeches and then arrived the final time for prize-giving .
Planning for 2022 has started building up to the proposed final in September . The eye of the Province of Free State is firmly set on the World Skills Competition in 2023 . Mr Lodewyk provided more than enough information about the background to the event which started in 2018 , fully supported by the DHET Free State , with Welding and Metalwork increasing to seven in 2021 as indicated at the beginning
