Wimpie Lodewyk , organiser and programme director . of this article . In 2019 , it increased to three specialisations , and in 2021 and 2022 , seven specialisations .
This year saw 1 036 learners registered for the skills competitions with 81 mentors at school level . 25 Technical Schools participated and eight Agricultural Schools . The gender breakdown was 302 girls and 533 boys . Of the girls , three were in plumbing which gives a good idea that girls / women are making trades their own and this is to be commended .
Briefly the schools participate at district level which makes for several district events , building up to the finals in Bloemfontein .
Please note : Whilst the photographs show learners without masks , this was only for purposes of the photo . All Covid-19 protocols were followed . PA
“ This year saw 1036 learners registered for the skills competitions with 81 mentors at school level ”
For plumbing , a total of 250 Grade 10 and 11 learners entered , and through the elimination process , ending up with 14 learners for plumbing . What is excellent is that at each level prizes are awarded encouraging learners to better themselves and learn from their mistakes in the competitions .
Plumbing Africa asked Mr Lodewyk about the development and intertest in the Skills Competition .
“ The quality in each specialisation / trade grows wonderfully – skills at the school level improves a lot and we have a few challenges still to work on . Every year learners and educators are more positive about the competition . A company like SASOL is more interested in the outcomes and wants to contribute more in the future , something I hope other stakeholders follow .”
