It all begins at school

When approached by Gerrie Botha of IOPSA about the Free State Schools Skills Competition , I found myself driving down to Bloemfontein for the last task and prize-giving , so excited was I to be witness to school children practicing our trade .

Not only plumbing , but other trades such as welding , automotive , construction and woodworking , power systems and electronics . It is known as the Free State Technical Schools Competition , which has run for three years under the auspices of the Free State Province Department of Education . A full three day of tasks ended with one smaller task and the prize giving on the fourth day .

SASOL is to be commended for its sponsorship of this event , as do companies that provide their workshops and training centres for the learners such as SA Truck Bodies Training Centre , CS Electrical Training Centre , EE Services and HTS Louis Botha school .
For plumbing , acknowledgement must go to sponsors , Plumblink , Dutton Plastics Engineering ( DPE ) and IOPSA .
The basic test requirements are cutting , sizing , measuring , functioning and quality of soldering . Every one of these require
1 to 3 : Three of the tasks undertaken . The fourth task was the installation of cisterns sponsored by DPE .
