Before the retrofit the building was operating off one 24kW electric element consuming 150 amps per day .
Each tank , one on the roof and another in the basement of 20 000 litres each remained , with the roof tank taking in the municipal supply and flowing down to the basement tank . The system uses nine x 3.5kW ( 18 000 BTU ) heat pumps linked to a new control panel together with MD ’ s patented commercial copper element and savings in excess of R30 000 per month have already been realised .

All the original piping and insulation remained , as with the pumps .
