Tell my why you became a plumbing contractor – Robert Schoeman
By
Rory Macnamara
This month we chatted to Robert Schoeman of RMS Plumbers about the value of science in plumbing and how a deeper understanding goes a long way . Robert is an IOPSA Compliance Auditor and won the award for Auditor of the Year in 2019 .
David : So tell me why you became a plumber , Robert ?
Robert : I started my plumbing career in 2003 with a company based in Pretoria and I can definitely say that it ’ s been a great journey through the plumbing industry . I learnt from one of the best plumbers in the industry , who had been a part of the industry for over 35 years . He taught me a great deal about the regulations and how to do things properly from the beginning . After a while I got the knack for plumbing and I eventually came to the realisation that plumbing is so much more than what everybody thinks it is . Especially with regards to the diversity within the industry . It ’ s not just pipes ; it ’ s pressure , water flow and so much more . Learning all of this made me realise that as a plumber you are part of something bigger than just the regular everyday stuff . Water is the most important commodity you ’ ve got on this earth – you can survive without anything else in the world but no living organism can survive without water . That ’ s why I wanted to take my plumbing career further , to be able to bring fresh water to people ’ s houses as well as learn the science behind it , to understand why we do what we do . For me that ’ s the most important part , solving people ’ s problems and
