Despite its toxicity , yew was used in folk medicine , e . g . against epilepsy and against rabies . Its extremely hard wood was used in artistic carving in the Middle Ages and to equip soldiers . It is used in horticulture as a park tree , which forms many growth and color forms . In the past , the wood was used for the production of crossbows and also for the production of furniture - marquetry , it is also consumed by large animals , probably to get rid of intestinal parasites . In the past , yew wood was used to make long bows , today anti-cancer substances from its leaves are used in modern medicine . |

A tree of sorrow , but also of eternal life : In ancient Greece , the very powerful goddesses Erinye ( in Roman mythology the Furies ), servants of the underworld god Hades and his wife Persephone , were associated with the yew tree . They are responsible for the institution of blood revenge , which consists in the fact that the relative ( member of the family / clan ) of the slain has the right and duty to take revenge on the murderer and his relatives ( members of his family / clan ) with his own hand . Goddesses were depicted with a burning torch made of yew wood and snakes in their hair . Another goddess associated with this tree was Hecate , the underworld deity of ghosts and magic , teacher and protector of witches . She was also depicted with a torch in her hand surrounded by snakes , usually in three-headed and three-bodied form . At the same time , however , she was the protector of pregnant women and helped with child births . In antiquity , the yew tree was a tree of mourning and decorated the path of the dead to the underworld . Most yews are planted in cemeteries and other places of worship . In some countries , there is a tradition that the yew tree sends its roots to everyone who is buried . Time of flowering : Jan . Feb . ■ Mar . ■ Apr . May June July Aug . Sept . Oct . Nov . Dec .
