Evergreen tree or spreading shrub with a maximum height of 15 m , which lives of considerable age - up to 1,000 years . Trunks do not have resin canals Dark green needles are preserved for 6 – 8 years , they are built in a spiral shape this year ' s branches , on older ones in two rows . This is a dioecious ( male or female tree ) exceptionally monoecious plant ( with both male and female 4 flowers ). The male cones sit in the axils of the leaves on the underside of the branches , they are already visible in autumn . Female pine cones resemble slender buds that develop into seed berries . The scrotum is crimson-red , juicy , sticky , sweet taste . It is the only non-poisonous part of the plant , occasional food for birds . The nature reserve Harmanecká tisina in Veľká Fatra is currently the largest location of yew trees in Europe .
