Leading with Teacher Retention in Mind

Building leadership and support are among the most important factors in teachers' decisions about whether to stay in a school. The quality of leadership can have a large effect on teacher turnover. Teachers will often stay with a building leader that encourages and acknowledges staff, is supportive and approachable, communicates a clear vision, and runs a school well.

How Can Leaders Positively Impact Teacher Retention?

Support and ensure all new teachers receive the needed curricula and materials to teach

Provide leadership opportunities; build capacity from within

Have an open door office policy and make staff communication a priority and consistent

Create a respectful environment for staff and students
