Why stress the way you dress?

Why do schools force kids to follow a strict dress code? Aren't we at the age where we can control what we wear? Dress code is difficult for most people because the clothes that are forbidden are styles that can express ourselves. Another reason is that most of the clothes we are allowed to have are hard to find. Aren't we mature enough?
Most schools don't allow certain things such as shirts, colored hair, and plenty more, but isn't that what shows off who we are? It shows our creativity in many ways and it is fun to play around with.
Therefore a big problem for girls is that some of the clothes are difficult to find. Either the shorts are too short or the shirts that you admire are slight-ly inappropriate. If there wasn't a dress code school clothes shopping would be a breeze.
We should be mature enough to choose what we wear. Who would want to wear something to school that they know they will get laughed at. We should know are consequences with what we choose. If some people are not at that maturity level then they can suffer the consequence.
Yes, school is not a fashion show but we should still have the right to wear what we want.
