Upon successful completion of our first SPA project earlier this year, which helped the local preschool, my counterpart wanted to do another SPA project to help the Senior Citizen’ s Association of Novaci( SCAN), which unexpectedly donated resources to our preschool SPA project. After seeing my counterpart( who is also the director of the preschool) implement the SPA project to build capacity for early childhood development and families with small children, the seniors from SCAN were inspired to build capacity for their organization to better support the 230 senior citizens of Novaci.

The SPA project includes renovation of a rundown hall, turning it into a new Senior Center where we will hold events for the seniors, related to preventative health, civic participation, and socialization. We will also be holding“ Baba Power” leadership seminars for the senior women, providing them with the resources they need to mobilize and make a difference in their communities.
The President of SCAN discussed the association’ s vision and goals for the project with my counterpart as we wrote up the SPA application together. He further committed financial resources to the project, along with the Mayor of Novaci, resulting in our largest community contribution to a SPA project yet. The total amount of funds needed for this project is $ 10,458.05. While the total community contribution to our first SPA project was around 27 %, this time the community contribution is 62 %. The community of Novaci is learning how to mobilize local resources and that in itself is a great success!
