Volume 4 Issue 3 Page 7 Photo Exhibition: Macedonia through the Eyes of Peace Corps Volunteerism By Melissa Hearne and Jesus Villegas Photo Exhibition made possible with the assistance of Juliana Lukareva (PC staff), and PCVs Megan Thompson, Jesse Warner, Josh Del Pino, Jennifer Delaney In the past forty-five years, the mission of Peace Corps has not changed. And the three goals of that mission are: 1. Helping the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women. 2. Helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served. 3. Helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans. Peace Corps was first invited to Macedonia in 1996. Today, nearly sixty volunteers serve in the country. Volunteers in Macedonia serve by assisting teachers of English and in the area of community development by working with non-governmental organizations in the country's burgeoning civil society. In addition, many volunteers engage in secondary projects in their communities – such as holding additional English classes, running youth camps, environmental clean ups, and many other projects. At the same time they're learning about the cultures and languages of the Republic of Macedonia, and teaching their friends and family home in America about their experiences here. This photo exhibition was conceived as a way to both educate the people of Macedonia about the work of Peace Corps in their country and to celebrate Peace Corps' past and legacy in volunteerism. The photos included in the exhibition were taken by currently-serving Peace Corps Volunteers from the ninth group and tenth group of volunteers. This photo exhibition highlights the work of the nearly 60 volunteers currently serving in the Republic of Macedonia. The exhibit and traveled throughout the country through between September and December 2006.
