Parks and Recreation System Master Plan Update (2016) parks_and_recreation_system_master_plan_update_oct | Page 121
Dog Runs
There is growing demand for off-leash
facilities for dogs and there are now five LMPRD
parks with dog runs – Cherokee, Vettiner,
Champions, Toonerville and Waverly. There are
also dog runs at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park and
Beckley Creek Park. The Louisville Dog Run
Association manages all of these facilities. They
charge a membership fee, require proof of
vaccinations and issue gate codes to the
members. There are on-going issues with how to
Dog Run at Cherokee Park
manage the run areas to maintain turf or at least
to minimize mud because of the heavy use these facilities receive.
Disc Golf
LMPRD manages two disc golf courses, one each in Iroquois and
Vettiner Parks.
Recreational Boating
A demand for improved recreational access to
the Ohio River has been identified. There are currently
two public boat launch ramps, at Cox and Riverview
Parks. The 1995 Plan recommended exploring the
feasibility of one or two additional public launch ramps
by the river. Planning for new boating access on the
Ohio River should be coordinated with the
recommendations of the Ohio River Corridor Master
Plan, the River Road Scenic Corridor Management Plan
and any park master plans if boat ramps are proposed
in parks.
Canoemobile on the Ohio River, Shawnee Park
Canoeing is also popular recreational boating activity which can be supported on a
number of Louisville’s stream corridors such as Beargrass Creek and Floyds Fork and perhaps the
Ohio River. Future improvements along these waterways should consider put-in and take-out
areas to support paddlers. The Parklands provides several canoe access sites along Floyds Fork.
The West Louisville Outdoor Recreation Initiative is exploring use of both the Ohio River
and the Chickasaw Lake for canoe access.
