Advanced Math Placement
Math is a subject in which the school is able to provide a degree of leveled placement beginning in Grade 7. Grade level placement for Grade 7 is Math Course II. Advanced math placement for Grade 7 is Pre-Algebra.
A qualified middle school student, who is advanced in mathematics and has received an 84 or higher in Grade 6 math, may take Pre-Algebra during 7 th grade to prepare to take the high school Algebra I course in the 8 th grade.( Students on grade level will take Algebra I during the freshman year in high school.) High school credit will be earned by the advanced placement student only if the student finishes Pre-Algebra and Algebra I with a minimum grade of 84 for each course. If a passing grade of less than 84 is earned during the 7th or 8 th grade year, the student will receive middle school credit for each course, but Algebra I must be retaken in the freshman year to ensure the student has the necessary skills before being advanced to the next math course. In this case, therefore, Grade 8 high school credit will not be earned.
Students whose parents choose advanced math placement for them while in middle school will be expected to graduate with four high school credits in math, which will require them to take a minimum of three years of CCS math during their high school years. Advanced math placement is designed to allow able students to advance further in their math studies, not to help students meet their math requirements early.
All incoming Grade 7 students are automatically placed in Math Course II( on grade level) when schedules are designed. Parents who wish to have their student( who has received an 84 or better
