Weighted Scale for High School Courses

CCS uses a 3-level weighting system when determining student GPAs: Non-Weighted, General, and Advanced. The system assigns a quality point multiplier based on academic difficulty. A student’ s final grade is multiplied by the assigned point multiplier and then averaged to determine GPA.
Definitions: Non-Weighted Courses that will be non-weighted, in which students receive only a Pass / Fail grade, will be classified as non-weighted due to the challenging nature of being able to assess student progress. Students’ pass / fail will be based on attendance, participation, attitude, and effort. Non-weighted classes will be noted in their respective syllabi. Additionally, service credit( such as for Teacher’ s Assistant credit) and Varsity sports participation will also fall into the non-weighted category.
General The point value of a general class will be 1.00 for a full-credit course and 0.50 for a half-credit course. All graded( not Pass / Fail), non-advanced courses will be considered general classes. General math courses that are taken by advanced students at a younger grade level * will be considered general courses when weighting them, since they are still required for graduation.
Advanced Advanced courses shall be given a weight of 1.05. A course shall be deemed advanced when it meets all the following qualifications: 1) It is not required for graduation. 2) The student must have a teacher’ s recommendation or a parent’ s waiver to enroll in the course.
3) When a parent chooses to sign a waiver to supersede the teacher’ s non-recommendation, the parent must also have a tutor for the student to enroll, because all advanced courses will follow an advanced-level pace.
4) Prerequisites must be outlined and met for admission to the course.
