next step in their outdoor education skills . This is an off-campus excursion that builds on the variety of outdoor pursuits introduced through the Grade 8 Outdoor Education program . Students continue to explore personal leadership , group leadership and environmental stewardship , supporting student understanding of their role within successful communities . Group activities include low ropes , high ropes , art in nature , hiking and camping skills . Students will establish positive and effective relationship skills through collaborative teambuilding activities , outdoor pursuits and practical application during a one-night expeditionary hiking trip . Adhering to the philosophy of ‘ challenge by choice ’, students are empowered to choose to participate in the activities for a personalized level of engagement .
Grade 10 Outdoor Education
This four-day program at Camp Fircom on Please note : The Grade 10 students will attend Camp Fircom in the 2022-23 school year , as they did not participate in this program in Grade 9 . Please see program details above . The trip to Strathcona Park Lodge will resume in 2023-24 .
This five-day trip to Strathcona Park Lodge on Vancouver Island provides an opportunity for students to engage in an immersive wilderness program , and a chance to explore British Columbia ’ s oldest provincial park . While at the lodge , students will have the opportunity to participate in a series of outdoor adventure pursuits , including hiking , kayaking , canoeing , rock climbing , and high ropes . Students will also participate in community building and leadership activities at Strathcona Park Lodge before departing for their overnight journey .
Grade 11 Outdoor Education
This four-day program takes place at the Cheakamus Centre , north of Squamish and has a fully immersed an Indigenous education focus . The purpose of this program is to foster ongoing curiosity and to seek further knowledge and connections with Squamish Nation ( Sk̲ wx̲ wú7mesh Úxwumixw ) perspectives .
Learning at the Cheakamus Centre in ( Sk̲ wx̲ wú7mesh ) Squamish , students will be immersed in Squamish culture and worldviews , as well as the historical context of BC . Moreso , CHS is deeply honoured to have aspects of this program facilitated by Squamish Nation ( Sk̲ wx̲ wú7mesh Úxwumixw ) educators . This Ivy Camp provides students with opportunities to further their understanding of Indigenous Peoples ’ relationship to land and traditional ecological knowledge through place based learning and outdoor activities . Through close collaboration with members of various Indigenous communities , students will be encouraged to be open -minded and take risks by stepping outside of their comfort zones , both physically and mentally . The purpose of this program is to create and encourage curiosity within our students to seek further knowledge and connections with Squamish Nation ( Sk̲ wx̲ wú7mesh Úxwumixw ) perspectives and allow meaningful exploration of the Indigenous People of this territory . Learning at the Cheakamus Centre in ( Sk̲ wx̲ wú7mesh ) Squamish will immerse students in cultures , worldviews and the history of BC and how Indigenous life is connected to the outdoors . Additionally , off-site day trip will safely introduce students to winter outdoor pursuits . Students engage in a traditional Indigenous longhouse program and discover more about Indigenous history and environmental practices and values .
Grade 12 Outdoor Education
This three-day outdoor education trip provides students with the opportunity to formally reflect on their past five years at CHS , and serves as an environment to celebrate Outdoor Education accomplishments . Through guided activities , students will consider what they have learned about themselves , their peers and their community . This trip will be a time to capture and remark on memorable moments , a time to inquire about their personal journeys , and a time to acknowledge and celebrate with their peers . Students will have the opportunity to participate in a whitewater rafting adventure down the Thompson River .
