Reporting on Academic Progress

Full-Year or Semester Courses
Courses offered at Crofton House School for students in Grades 8 to 12 are either full-year or semester ( half-year ) courses . For all courses , student progress is evaluated in an ongoing manner without further division in ‘ terms ’. What this means for students is that overall grades change with each summative assessment and it is not until January , for first semester courses , or June , for the second semester and full-year courses , that a grade is final or fixed .
Six Opportunities for Communication
At Crofton House School , we believe in maintaining open and clear communication with students and parents / guardians throughout the school year . Student progress in both learning standards and learning habits are both areas where connection and communication require a deliberate approach . For this reason , the School schedules six opportunities for communication about student progress spread relatively evenly across the academic year — four in writing and two face-to-face .
Conference 1 takes place early November . This conference is by request only . Families who are not requested to book a conference are welcome to connect with the teacher on an as needed basis . The focus of this conference is to proactively address any initial student concerns and ensure the structures and supports are in place for a successful year . The student and parent are required to attend this conference .
Report 1 is available at the end of November and Report 2 is available early-February . The purpose of these reports are to provide a full written update on student learning in relation to the Learning Standards of the Provincial Curriculum . For grades 8-12 , student progress will be reported by learning standard on the proficiency scale . For grades 10-12 , an overall percent will also be reported in addition to reporting of proficiency in each standard for each course . The six learning habits will also be reported as either Satisfactory ( S ) or Needs Improvement ( NI ). These reports include descriptive feedback from each subject teacher which includes feedback on areas of significant growth and opportunities for further development . Attendance to date is also reported . In addition , these reports include student-generated self reflections of core competencies and goal setting . Advisors and course teachers provide full comments on these reports . Report 1 and 2 reflect full year and semester 1 courses .
Conference 2 takes place in mid-March . This ‘ Parent-Student-Teacher ’ conference involves active participation from the student , teacher and parents . This conference is for all families with their advisor and by request only to address questions and next steps in learning . Families who are not requested to book a conference are welcome to connect with the teacher on an as needed basis .
