Life-Threatening Medical Conditions
Life-threatening medical conditions include allergies that could cause anaphylactic reactions , diabetes , acute asthma , blood clotting disorders , epilepsy , serious heart condition and others . The School database , MySchool , places a red cross icon beside the name of any student with a life-threatening medical condition , including allergies , as identified by parents / guardians in the annual Student Information Questionnaire . The identity ( i . e ., name , photo , grade and condition ) of students are also posted in a location where only Junior and Senior staff can view on a regular basis .
When the School becomes aware of a student diagnosed with a life-threatening allergy or diabetes , the School will connect with the student ’ s parents / guardians to ensure they are aware of the importance of the student carrying an EpiPen ( allergy ) or the requirement of providing the school with a 72-hour kit .
Should a student develop a life-threatening condition during the school year , it is the parents / guardians responsibility to communicate this information to their school ’ s First Aid Attendant .
Anaphylaxis & Being an “ Allergen- Aware ” School
In our school are students and staff at risk for potentially life-threatening allergies . Some are at risk for insect-sting allergies , while most are allergic to food . Food-allergic individuals can experience a life-threatening reaction from ingesting a very small amount of their allergen . Exposure through skin contact or inhalation can cause allergic reactions but generally not anaphylaxis .
Anaphylaxis ( pronounced anna-fill-axis ) is a severe allergic reaction that can be caused by foods , insect stings , medications , latex or other substances . While anaphylaxis can lead to death if left untreated , anaphylactic reactions and fatalities can be avoided . Education and awareness are key to keeping students with potentially life-threatening allergies safe .
The Crofton House School Anaphylaxis Plan is designed to ensure that students and staff at risk are identified , strategies are in place to minimize the potential for accidental exposure , and staff and key volunteers are trained to respond in an emergency situation .
An “ Allergen-Aware ” School
Crofton House School defines itself as an “ allergen-aware school ”. An “ allergen-aware ” school knows that some allergens are “ lifethreatening ”, takes steps to minimize exposure , accepts responsibility for educating staff , students and parents / guardians on the importance of maintaining an “ allergen-aware ” culture , has an emergency response plan and regularly trains all staff to respond appropriately in the event of an anaphylaxis emergency .
