Remembrance Day
On Remembrance Day , members of the armed forces who have fought and died in the line of duty are commemorated . Also known as Armistice Day , Remembrance Day marks the end of the First World War on November 11 , 1918 , at 11:00 am ( the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month ). Some 100,000 Canadian soldiers died in the First and Second World Wars . During those wars , scores of Croftonians volunteered for the Red Cross and became ambulance drivers and nurses abroad , serving in Poland , England , France , Germany and other countries . At a special assembly attended by all students from Grade 1 to 12 , CHS honours the memory and courage of those who served .
The Winter Bazaar
The Crofton House Winter Bazaar is a cherished tradition , with roots going back to the early ‘ 40 when proceeds raised were donated to the Red Cross and Save the Children Funds , among others . The event is organized by the CHS Parents ’ Auxiliary and takes place annually in late November . The Winter Bazaar is made possible by the volunteer efforts of our parents , guardians , students and staff , and aims to build community by inviting our family and friends to join in support of a community partner , most recently KidSafe . accommodate the growing size of our student body and community , and to showcase the CHS musical program . The Carol Service , held on the last Friday before Winter Break , reconnects us to our past and looks to the future , and is a celebration enjoyed by the whole school community .
The School ’ s Birthday
March 1 , 1898 was the day the first students enrolled at CHS . Hence , it is regarded as the School ’ s founding date . It is a long-standing tradition at CHS to celebrate the School ’ s birthday early in March . The celebration was moved from March 1 to the first Friday in March in the 1960s . Today , the School ’ s birthday is associated with International Women ’ s Day , a global day in early March celebrating the social , economic and cultural achievements of women .
CHS Parents ’ Auxiliary Events
The CHS Parents ’ Auxiliary is a vital part of the school community and takes responsibility for parent-led events with a mission to create an active , inclusive , and engaged community that enriches school life for students and families . These social gatherings have become traditions and are an important part of school life . At these events , parents / guardians can network , make friends and share time with their daughters .
Carol Service
The Carol Service is a service within the Anglican Church tradition that includes nine readings and carols . Its origins date back to the late 1800s . In the early 1900s , King ’ s College established the version currently experienced around the world . The service was introduced to Crofton House in 1938 by Head of School , Miss Macdonald . Over time , the foundational elements have remained true to the Anglican Church ’ s nine lessons and carols enjoyed across the world at this time , while other aspects , including the location of the Carol Service , have evolved to
