Whole Girl Education Model
At its core , Crofton House School is one school . The School recognizes , however , that students require environments , routines , education models and learning supports that are unique to their developmental stages . Reading this handbook will give parents an understanding of how the School develops from the Early Childhood Education ( ECE ) Centre , through the Junior School years , which have a primary and middle school program , and graduation to Senior School . Each stage of the School ’ s educational program is thoughtfully developed to enhance the personal and academic growth of each student .
In a girl-centred learning environment , students feel valued as individuals ; within the collective school community , they create and plan a personal journey . As they embrace responsibility for their journey , they are more engaged and invested in their learning . The environment nurtures the whole girl , giving her choice while making meaningful connections to all aspects of her education .
The School fosters intellectual curiosity by centering the learning experience on questioning , imagination , observation and wonder . Creative and critical thinking are valued and encouraged .
Students develop an understanding of and participate in the shared goals of the learning community . As they work together , share ideas , create knowledge , solve problems , encourage and foster interdependent relations and appreciate diversity , they enhance the collective learning experience .
The School offers a broad range of educational experiences for students of all ages . Equal to academic scholarship within CHS is a focus on social and emotional learning . Woven throughout curricular and co-curricular activities and supported by all staff , this element of development is an integral part of whole girl education .
Our Traditions
CHS is a dynamic and modern school that benefits from the rich traditions reflected in the School ’ s history , changing generations and community diversity .
The Gordon Tartan
Wearers of the CHS uniform are living symbols of the time-honoured traditions of the School . The school uniform was introduced in 1923 by Dr . Gordon . It included a tunic , blouse and tie , sensible oxfords , black stockings for senior girls and socks for junior girls . The tunic style endured for many years , with a few modifications . The tunics and black stockings were replaced with smart blouses and pleated Gordon tartan skirts in 1956 . Today , the uniform represents heritage and tradition , including the Head Girl ’ s red blazer , first worn in the 1940s , the white blazers for school officers introduced in the late ‘ 50s and worn by the Assistant Head Girl today , and green blazers worn by Prefects .
School House System
The House System was introduced to the Senior School in 1937 by Headmistress Sara Macdonald , and is an important part of the School ’ s structure and leadership . Ms Macdonald and her staff considered it a “ good arrangement for sport and debating competitions ,” and divided the students into four Houses : Douglas , Gordon , Stuart and Wallace . In 1961 , Fraser and McDougall were added . In the Junior School , the House System was introduced in 1943 by Miss Bryan . A bird lover , she organized the students into four Houses : Hummingbirds , Robins , Swallows and Wrens .
Land Acknowledgement
At important events and assemblies , the School acknowledges the land upon which Crofton House School is located . Embedded in the larger educational program , the land acknowledgement is a meaningful act of honouring the Indigenous history and people of this place , and expressing
