I saw an article in USA Today entitled , " Some See Signs of Doom in Storms ' Clouds ." It read , " Record flooding across the Midwest caps 12 months in which Hurricane Andrew battered the South and a winter ' storm of the century ' blanketed the East . "
Some people have begun to ask : " Is God trying to tell us something ?" Lanny Elmore , a Baptist minister from Dallas says : " The Bible says that in the latter days , there will be earthquakes , and all of that refers to natural disasters ... We live in a time like that ."
" For a small but growing number of believers , however , the year ' s storms aren ' t just signs from God , they ' re also signs of the end of the world ." Robert Lyle of Christian Research Institute , in Irvine , California says , " As we move toward the year 2000 , we ' re going to see what we call a millennium madness . Any natural disasters and any wars are going to be seen in that light . " Is this madness ? Are we talking silliness ? Are we crazy ? Are we like some idiot walking around with a sign that says ,
" Repent — The world is coming to an end ?" Or is it true ? What about it ? What does the Bible say about it ? ( Alan Bash , " Some See Signs of Doom in Storms ' Clouds ," in
USA Today , July 13 , 1993 ).
Sandbags at a Levee during a Flood ( p . 6 )
During the floods that swept through the Midwest , people fought desperately to save their homes , possessions , and lives . Levees were constructed to reroute the rivers and protect the cities . People patrolled the levees day and night with sandbags — watching for two things :
1 . They were watching to see whether the river was going to get any higher because if the river should start to come over the levee , several thousand people would be wiped out and their houses would be under water .
2 . They were watching for leaks . They were going up and down the sandbag levees watching for leaks , ready to throw sandbags on it immediately . Why ? Because their homes and their lives were at stake . They were watching . This is the force of the Greek word Jesus uses when he says to "' watch ' for My Return ".
